Fall Semester: 2nd six weeks, Week 1 (2012)

Photo I
Depth of FieldThis week photo I is working on and open assignment. Between technical and conceptual assignments students are given a break and allowed to shoot a roll of film of whatever subject they choose. This is called an open assignment and there are several throughout the year. We are beginning to discuss depth of field and how it is achieved using the aperture of the camera. Below are some examples of depth of field.

Important information to remember about Depth of Field:
  • You must change your aperture. Just changing your focus is not the same thing.
  • When you change your aperture you must also change your shutter speed to compensate. Remember that every action has an opposite and equal reaction. If you allow less light in by making your aperture smaller you must set your shutter time longer.
  • A small aperture number on your camera (1.4, 2.8) means that your opening is larger and it is allowing a lot of light in through the lens. This gives you a narrow or shallow depth of field. And again the opposite is true. A larger number (11, 22) is a very small opening and allows very little light to enter the lens. This gives you a very wide or deep depth of field.
  • For your assignment you need to take picture sets for every picture you take. See the example below. One should have a shallow depth of field and the other a deep depth.

This images was taken using a focal length of 51mm with an ISO setting of 100 and an exposure of 1/8 of a sec @ f 2.8

Check out this video. It is very short and concise.

Fall Semester: 1st six weeks, Week 2 (2012)

This week students are building pinhole cameras and learning about exposure times. They will shoot a roll of film and develop it. They will make prints and learn how to use film in the enlargers. Pinhole photography has been around since the 5th century BC and is the oldest know form of photographic image capture. Giant pinholes called camera obscuras, translated from Latin dark chamber/room, were used to watch solar eclipses during ancient times. During the renaissance they were used to capture objects for painting or projecting murals onto walls.

Fall Semester: 1st six weeks, Week 1 (2012)

Photo I:
This week in photo I we are talking about the History of photography in class. First we are going to get started right away in the darkroom making Rayograms/Photogarms.
Next week we will be building pinhole cameras and working with them.

Here are some examples of photograms:

Photo II & III
In advanced photography we are going to discuss the importance of color calibration and everyone will be assigned a computer to calibrate. We are going to begin the year discussing the most important aspect of photography in my opinion, controlling light.

Our first in class assignment is to make Monotone Gum Prints. All negatives and prints will be made in class.

First Assignment:

Part A.
Sign up for the Art Awards if you have not done so. You will need you social security number.

Part B.
Your first shooting assignment will be 35 assignment in 1. You are to take photos that represent the entire alphabet A-Z and the numbers 1-9. You must capture the letter in the photograph and it must occur naturally. You cannot take pictures of graphic text or any sort of lettering on signs and so forth. You may not manipulate the area where you take you images. I just want you to find the letter occurring naturally. Example (perhaps tree branches shot from a certain angel look like an A, metal pipes from a certain position look like and L, and a man hole cover with a stick or leaf on it looks like a Q, etc...) This assignment will be due Thursday by the end of class. All images should be saved into your folder on the Drobo server.
