This is accomplished by doubling the ISO for each extra shot on the film frame. For instance, if one is using a film rated at 400 ISO If you are going to shoot two shots on one frame you can change the ISO to 800. This allows less light into the camera compensating for the light that will be let in for the second shot. At 400 ISO for 3 shots one would set their ISO to 1600 and so-on-and-so-forth. The old way to do multiple exposure is to shoot the roll all the way through the camera once then rewind it and load the same film and shoot it through again. Contemporary cameras have a setting that allows for multiple shots to be taken on the same frame. Some cameras allow up to 9 overlapping exposures.

There is just something about in camera multiple exposure that cannot be achieved by digital means. In my opinion it is a feeling of authenticity, rawness and honesty that is lacking in many digital images.

Next assignment will be your Panoramic due after break for Seniors or as your midterm for everyone else.

Ex.

Photo AP:
Working on breadth section.

Have a great week!,
Mr. F

Third Six Weeks- Week One

Photo I:

This week students in photo I are working on an assignment capturing objects in motion with slow shutter speeds so that the objects leave a ghosted trailer behind them. They are also having to deal with the motion concept of panning. Panning is when one tracks an object with the camera as the shutter release button is pushed while using a slow shutter speed. Students are working with the light meter in their cameras on manual setting and determining the correct aperture to match their shutter speed accordingly.

Students will need to use a slow shutter speed below 60th of a second. How slow the shutter should be depends on how fast the object is moving which they are trying to photograph.

Ex.

Photo II & III:
Working on AP collage project.

Mr. F

Second 6 weeks: Week 4

Photo I:
This week students are shooting an assignment related to stop motion. Between technical and conceptual assignments students are given a break and allowed to shoot a roll of film of whatever subject they choose. This is called an open assignment and there are several throughout the year. We are beginning to discuss depth of field and how it is achieved using the aperture of the camera. Below are some examples of depth of field.

Important information to remember about Depth of Field:

You must change your aperture. Just changing your focus is not the same thing.

When you change your aperture you must also change your shutter speed to compensate. Remember that every action has an opposite and equal reaction. If you allow less light in by making your aperture smaller you must set your shutter time longer.

A small aperture number on your camera (1.4, 2.8) means that your opening is larger and it is allowing a lot of light in through the lens. This gives you a narrow or shallow depth of field. And again the opposite is true. A larger number (11, 22) is a very small opening and allows very little light to enter the lens. This gives you a very wide or deep depth of field.

For your assignment you need to take picture sets for every picture you take. See the example below. One should have a shallow depth of field and the other a deep depth.

This images was taken using a focal length of 51mm with an ISO setting of 100 and an exposure of 1/8 of a sec @ f 2.8

This images was taken using a focal length of 51mm with an ISO setting of 100 and an exposure of 8 sec @ f 22

Check out this video. Students should take a roll of film and shoot it at a higher ISO setting. Ex. If a student is shooting 400 ISO film and they want to push the film to 800 then they just set there ISO on their camera from 400 to 800. With 100 the student will adjust ISO to 400. This is used in low light situations where you might not want your subject to be blurred and the use of flash would not be advantageous. The disadvantages to this is that the pictures will have a higher level of grain and contrast.

Example:

As described above, the student will set their ISO (film speed) to a higher ISO setting (EX. if film rated speed is 400 one can push it to 800 or 1600). This allows the photographer the ability to take pictures in low light settings without the use of a flash, which might not work when using the films rated speed. 6 prints will need to be submitted for grading.

Photo II & III:
Gum over cyanotype prints.

Students should start thinking about a stop animation video they would like to make.

Example:

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102); If you do not have a digital camera please use pictures from your final exam. Most digital cameras made in recent years are relatively good for use in class. It is best if you have a camera that can shoot in RAW mode but this is not necessary for Photo I class.

Here is an example of a panoramic shot that I took a couple of years ago. It is not a great photo. In fact it is really over exposed but it shows what PhotoMerge does. I used Bridge and PhotoMerge to put it together in about 5 minutes. This is what our first digital assignment will be in class when you return.

Photo II:
Shoot the next 100 shots for your movie. All negatives and prints will be made in class.

First Assignment:

Part A.

Sign up for the Art Awards if you have not done so. You will need you social security number.

Part B.

Your first shooting assignment will be 35 assignment in 1. You are to take photos that represent the entire alphabet A-Z and the numbers 1-9. You must capture the letter in the photograph and it must occur naturally. You cannot take pictures of graphic text or any sort of lettering on signs and so forth. You may not manipulate the area where you take you images. I just want you to find the letter occurring naturally. Example (perhaps tree branches shot from a certain angel look like an A, metal pipes from a certain position look like and L, and a man hole cover with a stick or leaf on it looks like a Q, etc...) This assignment will be due Thursday by the end of class. All images should be saved into your folder on the Drobo server.

Week 25

Photo I:
This week photo I should be taking pictures related to Landscape/Citiscape and they are due this Friday.

Photo II &
